Have you heard about this region before?
Ask any tourist that just arrives at Schiphol Airport where they will be going on their stay in The Netherlands and you will have about a 90 percent chance that they will be visiting Amsterdam, the Zaanse Schans, and Volendam. Next, to that, they might want to see some tulip fields, wooden shoes, windmills, and cheese.
But why not change that up, and visit Westfriesland, a region in the Northwest of the country, and situated only 40 minutes from the airport. It is riddled with hidden treasures such as Enkhuizen, Hoorn, Medemblik and much more.
The region does also contain the “typical” Dutch sights to see; tulip fields color the views from March to the beginning of May and you can rent a boat almost anywhere to take a boat ride through the many ditches. During your travels in Westfriesland, you can find a whopping 30 windmills, scattered around the region. Most of them are still being operated!
The rich history is displayed in in more than 50 museums that can be found in almost every village. You could say that the people of Westfriesland are proud of there heritage.
So, if you are planning a trip to the Netherlands, make a little detour and visit West Friesland.
